Abstract:
This presentation will provide both assessment and intervention considerations and strategies for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The diagnostic criteria for Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) and its subthreshold diagnoses will be explained and red flags or early indicators of autism will be highlighted with videotaped examples. Participants will learn ways to create diagnostic profiles highlighting the communication and social strengths and challenges of children with autism. Further, strategies for assessment and progress monitoring will be provided. The presentation will also emphasize evidence-based interventions that support both the communication and social interaction of children with ASD. These interventions will include picture exchange communication system, pivotal response training, video modeling, social stories, comic strip conversations, and peer mediation. Videotapes will be used to share examples of the selected interventions.
