This presentation will “walk” the participant through the Auditory Processing Evaluation via lecture, demonstration and case studies. Particular attention will be placed on the importance that children have different types of auditory processing weaknesses and their individual needs vary. Background information, case history and other multidisciplinary assessments are critical to obtain prior to the scheduled appointment to help guide the audiologist during the auditory process evaluation of the referred child. Careful analysis of objective measurements and behavioral responses add to the final interpretation, diagnosis and recommended classroom management and some specific therapy activities (including apps).

At the conclusion of this program the learner will be able to identify various auditory processing tests used by audiologists, discuss how objective measurements and behavioral responses add to the interpretation and diagnosis of APD and develop therapeutic objectives to treat AP weakness.

Presented by: Courtney Caruso, MS, CC-SLP

Courtney Caruso received a Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Loyola University Maryland and a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from Teachers College, Columbia University.  Courtney is bilingual in English and Spanish.  She has been working as a bilingual speech-language pathologist in New Jersey for over three years.  She has experience working with children and adults in a variety of settings, including private practice, head start, schools, and hospitals. Courtney had the opportunity to provide speech-language pathology and aural habilitation services to children in Bolivia in 2008. Currently, she provides Early Intervention services to Spanish-speaking and bilingual children, works as a speech-language pathologist at the Adler Aphasia Center and is an adjunct clinical supervisor at Montclair State University.  She is a member of ASHA and NJSHA and serves as the Vice Chair of the NJSHA Multicultural Committee.

Over-identification of minority and CLD individuals in special education and related services is a common, yet avoidable, problem.  With appropriate assessment measures in place, CLD individuals will not qualify for services on the sole basis of their speech and language differences, but rather the correct individuals will receive the services they need based on true communication disorders and disabilities.  This webinar will discuss current research in the assessment of CLD populations and how the research is related to Federal and State law.  Biases present in commonly used standardized assessments will also be addressed.

After completing this course, participants will be able to understand federal, state and ASHA guidelines in appropriate and non-biased assessment, discuss best practice for evaluation individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse populations, and explain the flaw and biases of currently used standardized assessments.

Webinar fee is $25.
