NJSHA/NJIDA Annual Spring Joint Conference, is a joint venture between The New Jersey Speech-Language Hearing Association and the NJ Branch of the International Dyslexia Association, to present a one day conference that will benefit the wide range of members for both associations.

Speaker Bio:

Margaret G. McKeown is a Senior Scientist at University of Pittsburgh’s Learning Research and Development Center. Dr. McKeown’s work addresses practical problems that classroom teachers and their students face. Her work covers instructional design and teacher professional development in reading comprehension and vocabulary. Dr. McKeown received her Ph.D. in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983, and she received the Most Outstanding Dissertation Award in 1985 from the International Reading Association. She has served as VP for Division C of the American Educational Research Association and as the editor of AERA’s research journal, AERJ. Dr. McKeown has published extensively for both research and practitioner audiences. She is the co-developer, with Isabel Beck, of Questioning the Author and robust vocabulary instruction. Her book Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction co-authored with Isabel Beck and Linda Kucan, is a best-seller. Dr. McKeown has been a frequent speaker at professional conferences and has served as consultant to school districts and publishing companies. Before her career in research, Dr. McKeown taught reading and language arts in elementary school.

Abstract:

The presentation will focus on principles of vocabulary learning and their implications for instruction, including practices that develop students’ vocabulary most effectively.  Topics include selecting words to teach, introducing word meanings, and developing lively, engaging ways for students to interact with word meanings so that they can come to their own words.

Continuing Education:

This program is offered for 0.5 CEUs
(Intermediate level, Professional area)
Attendee must be present the entire day, no partial credit will be given.

The New Jersey Speech-Language Hearing Association is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech- Language Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology.  ASHA CE provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products or clinical procedures. 

Workshop participants interested in obtaining CEUs are required to make an annual ASHA CE Registry fee in order to register ASHA CEUs.  CE registry fees are paid the participant directly to the ASHA National Office.  The annual CE Registry fees allow registration of an unlimited number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year. No variable credit will be offered for this program.  Attendees must participate in the entire program to receive full CEU credit.  NJSHA is an approved Professional Development Provider by the New Jersey State Department of Education, ID Provider #320.
